Andrew Dalton was educated at Oundle School and Magdalen College, Oxford where he read Modern History. He joined SG Warburg & Co. Limited in 1971 and rose to become Vice Chairman of Mercury Asset Management Group plc (MAM). During this period, Andrew was instrumental in developing much of MAM’s international business as well as leading the Special Mandates group and Total Return team where he was responsible for managing over $6 billion of client assets.
In 2002, Andrew and Magnus Spence left MAM to establish Dalton Strategic Partnership (DSP). Over the next nine years, Andrew and Magnus built DSP into a global investment management firm. Today, the firm manages $2.5bn on behalf of a variety of clients ranging from sovereign wealth funds to private clients.
The firm is established on a set of principles which reflect the values of its founders. Andrew believed that clients’ interests always come first. That is why we are an independent, privately-owned fund management business, free from conflicts of interest. It is also why we only focus on asset management and is manifested in a commitment to openness and integrity.
Andrew also believed that active investment management is best undertaken within a global context. DSP comprises a team of specialist regional equity managers and global asset allocators who share research and analyse global economic and market developments together. The global investment debate which results from this is central to our approach to investment management.
In essence, these principles are the enduring legacy of Andrew’s experience and vision. They have shaped who we are and what we do and they remain at the heart of everything that we stand for.
Andrew died on the 24th April 2011 aged 61.
The Partners of DSP are committed to the principles on which the firm were founded. These principles and the success that they bring to DSP stand as a testament to a remarkable investor and a remarkable character.
